Missed Connections in Brooklyn, NY:
Junk Thrift Store
I was at the ‘Junk’ thrift store on
Drigg’s Ave in Williamsburg
Tuesday evening around 5pm
browsing through the postcards.
You were a beautiful brunette looking through the photos nearby,
wearing a white/off-white sweater,
jeans, and Buddy Holly-esque glasses.
You looked at photos for a long time, and I looked at postcards for a long time.
You snuck a couple cellphone shots of your favorites (?) and I was doing the same.
I kept trying to think of something clever to say to you or ask…
I wasn’t coming up with anything…
I noticed that we kept looking at each other.
I hoped that was intentional…
After playing with the toy piano for a bit,
and thinking it over,
I went outside to get some fresh air.
When I came back in, you were gone,
and I had missed my chance.
I’d love to go on an adventure with you or maybe
just exchange old photos and postcards.
Her Two Cents on Junk Thrift Store
This lovelorn Williamsburg poet shows a softer, gentler side of the Borough of Lost Boys. In our world of mass produced identical plastic items the eccentric, archaic, and less than clean surroundings of the thrift store attract a different kind of individual. In my experience, folks like these are migratory birds – they always come back to their favorite spots. Keep exploring those postcards and learn a witty song for the toy piano – chances are the object of your desire will return.
Gentle Readers: Junk stores, second-hand shops, Goodwill, Savers, Sal’s… our world has plenty of businesses catering to pre-owned items of varying quality for the budget conscious. While our Williamsburg poet found love in the thrift store, what’s the best item you’ve ever discovered at one of these places?
