Missed Connections in Boston, MA
To the Distressed Woman Lost in Cambridge
I was walking home pushing a cart-like thing when I saw you ahead of me.
You were blond, wearing a nice outfit, and carrying a couple of bags.
As I tried to avoid you, I hit a hole in the pavement and the drawers came spilling out.
That’s when I heard you on the phone pleading for directions for getting home.
I tried to figure out where you needed to go and showed you the closest subway stops on the map.
You seemed more than a little upset and had a hard time not crying.
You looked like you could really use a hug, but a) I was drenched in sweat from fencing practice and b) in your state, I was afraid a stranger trying to hug you might have freaked you out even more.
As I left you, you received a call and said, “Oh here is the monster right now.” When I got home I’d worried I’d given you bad directions and hopped on my bike to make sure you got to the subway all right.
You said it was really sweet of me to come check.
I don’t know what happened to you and I figured it was none of my business,
but clearly there was some vile knavery at work.
I hope you got home okay and that things weren’t as bad as I feared.
I probably should have offered to walk you to the subway stop from the beginning.
If you see this, I’d like to know if you got home all right.
Hope things are better for you today.
Note from the Missed Connections Chief Bottle Finder: Like the Brooklyn Bat Banisher or the Cell Phone Thief Superhero, it’s always nice to read a missed connection involving someone who was trying to help another human. Sounds like this individual was a real “knight in shining armor” (even if they don’t wear the clunky get-up during fencing practice).
