Missed Connections in New York City:
Chemical
science laugh it off
but it’s only natural
for crying out loud
it’s never clicked between us
the poet
and you
measured man plus chemical woman
laboratory twins of progress
filling petri dishes together sure thing
explain that away
down white corridors I’ve heard otherwise
in immaculate coats exchanging
proteins between yourselves
nucleotide base pairs maybe
then whispering together
and why do you do it and who for
spit it out! what are you in god’s name!
I’ve heard all this recently
from confident sources
but heed my words
and – read – lips – kiddo
or we too will cause disaster
with sheet lightning and titans’ thunder
hold on to those Richter scales
sincerely hold on to me
hold me
your poet.
Her Two Cents on Chemical
This lovelorn poet from the Big Apple appears to know that something is bubbling away in the laboratory of their true love’s heart (or maybe it’s the other way around). It doesn’t sound like this one is going to have a happy ending… The Victorian-era clip art image selected as the illustration reminded me of the tarot card for death but with a decidedly mossy look – not dissimilar to what you might find in a petri dish.
Gentle Readers: The scientist and the poet are often two very distinct personality types. While both may be introverted in nature, the similarities often stop there – one may be much more logical and “scientific” minded while the other closer attuned to feelings and emotions. Do you think these two personality types can survive and stay compatible in the long-run?

That was wonderful. This guy actually knows what he’s doing.

Glad you like it, sx… and yes, the writer is probably very aware – but how can you be certain the author is a man? I’m not sure if the line “measured man plus chemical woman” is enough to tell us the gender. What do you think?
