Missed Connections in Vermont
The Girl With the Beautiful Smile
I woke up this morning in kind of a crappy mood, not a normal occurrence for me but it does happen from time to time.
I did my thing and was on my way to work later than I had hoped, but earlier than was normal this week.
I crossed the bridge into Winooski and cut across the lawn behind Donny’s like I’ve done a thousand times before.
I hopped the stone fencing paying simple mind to a few stones out of place.
I looked up as I descended the small grassy hill and noticed you approaching.
You had the most beautiful smile about your face.
It almost stopped me in my tracks, and for a split second we both stutter stepped as we realized our paths would cause us to collide.
I would have been okay with that, even if your coffee had gotten all over my shirt.
Something about you was so familiar to me.
You seemed so warm, and that smile was intoxicating.
I can’t imagine that it was entirely for me, but you held it fast, and my gaze as well, as you quickly passed in and out of my life.
I’ve walked that route ten times a week for a hundred weeks, and never once have I seen you.
I hope that it is a new path for you, and that ours may cross again.
If nothing else, I wanted you to know that your smile brightened a complete stranger’s entire day.
So here’s to you, the girl with the beautiful smile.
Note from the Missed Connections Chief Bottle Finder: The moment I read this message I knew it had to be matched with this song by Freelance Whales. There’s something about their combination of instruments and vocal tones that make me think of walking in the crisp, clean air – just like our romantic Vermont poet.
