Note from the Missed Connections Chief Bottle Finder:
We can’t stop misunderstandings from happening but being aware of our environment and those near us can certainly help. This story is one to remember.

I’m So Sorry
Tonight at a downtown movie event, some gay friends and I commented jokingly that the hero in a movie must be gay. Shortly afterward, the lone guy next to me got up and left. And now I am eating out my liver thinking he must have felt unwelcome, that we were homophobic. We are not. I’m so sorry it sounded like that. I wish we could take it back. This makes me realize how important it is to be sensitive to comments made in public. I wanted to write this in the hopes that the guy who left would see it and realize we are sincerely remorseful.
This reminds me of a story about someone was ordered to put a nail in the fence for each mean thing they said in an effort to be more conscious of how they spoke. When they finally learned their lesson, they were given permission to remove each nail. Progress! But the wise one pointed out that although the nails were removed, holes remained. And as it is with words, once they drive a hole into the heart, even an apology doesn’t erase the pain they caused. And so that’s why it’s important to think before we speak.
Sorry, guy. 🙁
