Note from the Missed Connections Chief Bottle Finder:
If you don’t mind a high volume of messages, the Manhattan MC has a fair share of entertaining writing. Today we offer three special messages from a city that is considerably different now than in was in the 1990s – and we’re not just talking real estate values!
Missed Connections in NYC
I Wanna Fall In Love With You In The 90’s
i wanna fall in love with you in the 90’s
hold hands in the gap as we let donna karen and calvin klein inform our fashion choices
make you a mix tape not for nostalgia but just because it’s the way those sort of things were done
sit by my stereo listening to z100 waiting for “i alone” to come on so i can hit record
write your name on it in my best wildstyle
put a hidden track that you’d only hear if you let it play 3 minutes after hey jealousy ended
and when its done, i’d call you from a pay phone and hope your dad doesn’t answer
and hang up if he does
check the slot to see if i can get my quarter back
even though i never did.
remember our code?
one ring means it’s me
but don’t call after 11 because i don’t want my parents to get any ideas
they think i don’t have eyes for girls yet
but i’ve been seeing you for awhile
Her Two Cents on I Wanna Fall In Love With You In The 90s
Despite the fact that my profile photo appears to have been drawn in the 1890s, I have more than a lifetime worth of memories from the 1990s. Hard to believe that during that decade most folks didn’t really know about the internet and those who did were on dial-up modems. There was plenty of great music in the 90s and some really awful hair-styles.
Gentle Readers: The image selected for this message comes from BORF (John Tsombikos) whose graffiti work was prominent in the DC area in the mid-2000s. The wording, “Grownups are Obsolete” fits well with the youthful tone of the message as most of us can remember how clueless we perceived adults to be during our own adolescence. What are some memories you have of the 1990s involving grownups, early cellphones, or computers? It’s been a long time and the world has changed considerably!
