Our San Diego poet may be feeling calm in confident in the face of California aliens, but I wonder if they would be so brave if transported into HP Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu, which inspired this illustration by Mark Witton (who, in addition to his artwork, has some great writing and commentary on his Flickr site). Botoxed Hollywood has-beens can be scary to look at, but the darkest depths of our imagination is something different entirely.
