Rather More Likely
Missed Connections in Manhattan
As soon as the cybermen
had contrived to behave like you and me
we knew
the game was up
There they sit
with faces too bland for comfort
pour their drinks
look languidly into each other’s eyes
or shake with laughter
Impeccably
yet with notable refinement
they play the piano or just wanted to
procreate discreetly in the attic
and shoot the birds from the roof
while we
veterans of artlessness
see no other way out
but to mutate into angels
or rather more likely
turn outrageously evil
NOTE FROM THE MISSED CONNECTIONS CHIEF BOTTLE FINDER:
I’ve had this piece saved for some time – on first glance I found it intriguing but couldn’t quite make sense of it. I’m still not sure what it’s all about, but I do get the point about the cybermen contriving to be like humans – although I would argue that it’s the humans who created the cybermen to be like humans. Outrageously evil? Perhaps, but there’s no turning back now.
