Missed Connections in Philadelphia, PA: I Let My Mind Wander Around You and
Missed Connections in Ithaca, NY: Repeating the Resonation (Frere Jaques, Domaine)
Work: I’m a physical therapist.
Duration: I’m basically a self-taught photographer. I started fiddling around with photoshop in the 90s, while I was in high school. This was before I even got involved with the camera. At around 2008, I finally bought my own camera, a sony point-and-shoot. The following year, I started project 365 and went into self-portrait, which really helped me work on my camera techniques and photoshop skills. I got better cameras, but I’m really still a novice at this photography business, and I try to learn more through online tutorials and practice.
Influences: I have been inspired to take better photos by photographers I met in flickr. Photographers like Katie Lee (www.flickr.com/photos/katielee/), Anna Gay (www.flickr.com/photos/annagaycoan/), Miss Aniela (www.flickr.com/people/ndybisz/), and other self-photographers out there.
Preferred Work Environment: I prefer taking photos under the natural light. I love using a lot of light. But I usually do my editing at home.
Philosophy: I usually take self-portraits to convey emotions, or to to “say” things I want to share. You’ll know my current state of mind by looking at how dark or light my photos are. I like to experiment a lot. See a picture I like, then figure out a way to takes something like it. I don’t think there’s any more original ideas out there, just different takes on it (which is not to say it’s never been done before). Does this sound like a fragmented run-on sentences? Yes, I do that a lot too. This is why some days, I’d just rather take a photo and let people figure out what I want to say. Of course, other days, photos are just for fun.
Thank you, Janine, for licensing your work through Flickr Creative Commons and sharing your work with the Lovelorn Poets. Your dedication to Project 365 is inspiring and captures a very important principle – to improve your creative process and technical skills, one must commit to regular practice. Not always an easy thing to do after a long day at work, but the results and growth seen over time can become a motivating factor.
