Missed Connections in New Haven, CT: Alternate Universe Saturday Afternoon
Work: By day, web editor/designer. By night, cartoonist.
Education: I’m a self-taught cartoonist.
Duration: I’ve been publishing comics on the web since 2000. I started my current comic, an Asian American office romance comedy called Yellow Peril, in February of 2010. It’s taken me a few years to figure out what I want to do with my comics, but I think I finally found my calling with YP.
Influences: My art influences are pretty disparate. I draw inspiration from manga creators like Hiroaki Samura, Osamu Tezuka, Naoki Urasawa, Yukito Kishiro, Junji Ito. I’m also influenced by Western comic creators like Frank Cho, Travis Charest, Adam Hughes, Stan Sakai, Sean Galloway, Adrian Tomine, Derek Kirk Kim, Yuko Ota, Ananth Panagariya, Craig Thompson, Danielle Corsetto, and Neil Gaiman.
Preferred Work Environment: I work traditionally and digitally. I enjoy both mediums, but as I grow older, I find myself gravitating to more traditional work. I really enjoy using a brush to ink my pencil work. I’d love to try some oil painting. I took a few classes in college and had a lot of fun with it, but I just haven’t found the time to get back to it.
As for space, I have room in my house that I’m setting up as a little studio. I’ve got my drafting table right next to my computer work station. I’m hoping to get some shelves in there so I’ll a place for all my comics and art books. I like a well lit space so I’ve got a bright desk lamp as well as some bright white LED lamps. The more light, the better.
I tend to do my writing on my ride to and from work. Since I write an office romance comedy, the commute tends to get me in the mood I need to work out some proper office humor.
I listen to the radio a lot when I work, usually old time radio crime dramas on the internet.
Philosophy: ABC, Always Be Comicking. I eat, live, and breathe comics. I love making them, I love reading them. My hope is that I’ll live long enough to tell all the stories I have in my little brain meats. Not sure if that’s a philosophy, but it tends to drive me to draw whenever I have a spare moment.
Thank you, Jamie, for licensing your work through Flickr Creative Commons and sharing your thoughts with the Lovelorn Poets. Your “ABC” philosophy is an important one for all of us to remember – always be doing what you love to do! Whether that’s comicking or some other creative pursuit, stop making excusing for why you don’t have time and just start doing it. You’ll be amazed at what happens when you do. 🙂
