Her Two Cents
If you follow Mashable you may know that there’s a big mysterious to-do happening right now in New York City. It appears that this morning a person on the 1 train was handed a secret code and $50 by a homeless looking man. While that amount of cash doesn’t get you much in the Big Apple these days, the receiver of the message did what is expected of any modern-day sleuth (or PR intern) – they went straight to Reddit and asked for help in deciphering the code. Not surprisingly, the community flocked to the challenge and within short time the answer was posted. What happened next you can read here, but needless to say, the earlier excitement and intrigue has devolved into a mid-range skepticism. The outcome will surely be posted later this evening, and if this was some sort of advertising ploy – well, the strategist behind it certainly deserves a pat on the back for hooking people. But wouldn’t it be more interesting if it wasn’t so contrived? What is there was some deeper meaning or quest attached to all of this? Yes, some would say that means a creepy crazy crypto dude is wandering the streets – but it’s New York City. If truth be told, this tale reminds me of the opening chapters in Jostein Gaarder’s philosophical mystery, Sophie’s World. Cryptic notes carefully designed and thoughtfully placed to lead us down the rabbit hole to where we can stare at the shadows of shadows and contemplate the origins of light. The keys are within our reach. We will keep looking.
