The Geography Of Us
Missed Connections on Cape Cod/The Islands
There is a small space in time when I was yours
and you were mine…
Offshore, floating, untouched by tides-
Cresting, falling, side by side…
I came here once when we two were not far from one-
You came, other side of tomorrow,
And yesterday and today collapsed inside our hearts-
An escape, this cape, that speaks a soul-language much like our eyes –
Too blue sparkling depths, too light to hide.
If we knew the blue fire that burned inside,
would we have opened this box
Stepped aside,
Watched one walk away and one subside?
I come back to these shores to know my own soul.
I’m pulled back to these shores by phantom ghosts.
Yesterday weaves the dreams of tomorrow with those strands of today
And I find myself anciently aching to get back to this waterfront, to touch the shore again, to feel the wave…
Nearly two trips around the sun since the seasun has touched my face-
Skin, untouched.
Eyes, unseen.
There is no breathing without knowing the scent of you…
Seasun, my son of the sea, come back to me, find me in the sea shadows, by the shore, riding the waves out beyond the barriers that hold us two worlds apart on the same side of the earth.
If I had ever known one like I’ve known you, then I could breathe again.
Her Two Cents
Having grown up and lived much of my life near the beaches of New England, I can attest to the special qualities of Cape Cod’s combination of water, air, and land. It’s a place that has touched the hearts and souls of many people and exerts a migratory pull on them year after year. Every visitor may appear to have a different story, a different reason for their journey to the ocean, but perhaps their reasons are very similar underneath it all.
