Missed Connections in Manhattan
Her Two Cents
Manhattan still has its share of Gothic architecture and Flickr is filled with black and white photos of crows, hawks, and pigeons perched alongside elaborate carvings and gargoyles; sharp eyes staring down over the grid of streets looking for prey. The photo to the right was included with the poem and there’s something about the albino qualities of an otherwise dark bird that make it slightly more exotic and creepy – perfectly Gothic, indeed.
Follow me…
It isn’t such a ways away
I’m here right where you expected me to be
I can feel your cool skin shivering from the
unnatural forced air
and I feel the texture of your covers
as your hand huddles somewhere tucked under
your unshaven chin.
Follow me
I’m yours
I guess I was always yours
long before you told me a story
about your journey as a bird
that saw me high above a withering
branch
you found me
and you escaped your brief existence
as a bird
charmed
shedding your wings
but barren
of a human soul
Follow me
I am compressed
and complex
I cry
I cry a lot more than you think
maybe too much
these days
but follow me anywhere
as I wake up numbed out from the lack
of you
Follow me
the evening has a way of slipping
into day light
the day light counts its paces
till the moon aches and echoes
across St Peters street
You escape
You are made of shallow and hollow
things
birds are made of air
and I was made of fire
we escaped into a tangent
met
made a brief arch and scared our shadows
away
Follow me
I was once your Beautiful escape
but now to you I am as a nightmare
you can’t believe what you did
or how you acted
so you forget you were that bird
that once followed my scent
and my voice
Follow me
I know you want to
follow me
I will stay young forever
my skin will not decay
I am the coast line that ebbs and flows
and resurfaces like a lost love letter
like a message in a bottle
you will open me again one
day
and forget yourself in the end
and you will find yourself wishing to get lost
in my shadow
Follow me
it’s easy
I promise to keep you lost forever…..*
