I lived by the river for so many years
I’ve learned how to hear its song
It taught me you can’t choose a path
To force your life along
It contains the sounds of all living things
Meaning without and within
Those who seek riches are content to live
In a pleasant oblivion
Well I’ve been up and down its banks
I’ve seen people come and go
Life can be hard and can be sad
But it comforts me to know
That we all must accept the world
In its entirety
Nothing worthwhile comes without love
Painful as it may be
It provides knowledge without any words
And teaches what can’t be taught
What seems so elusive is within us all
Peace of mind can’t be bought
The river’s deep and the current fast
To cross it we need a guide
But we must choose of our own accord
To reach for the other side

And then there are rivers that are shallow, lazy, and smooth as glass. Reflecting the sky, the earth, and anything else we choose to consider. Not quite a mirror, careful inspection (or introspection) may yield subtle movements transpiring beneath the surface.
