Crowded airport bars
specialize in customers
who are just leaving.
Almost no one you meet at the airport is ‘from around here’.
Why would you stop there if you were almost home? No, it’s
all people going somewhere else, or on their way from somewhere else.
Sometimes you can spot who is working, and who was on vacation.
Especially if they are still wearing a straw hat, or have sunburned skin.
The sea of cell phones around me provides a random concert of dings, chirps and
whistles that are familiar, but not for me.
One canceled flight sends 100 passengers back into line complaining about delays
and another kind of missed connections.
Suddenly now they have time to meet, and exchange destinations
if only they looked around instead of down.
Seattle’s “haiku for …” writer used the Missed Connections platform to turn routine events (like getting stuck in an airport) into an opportunity to be a bit more mindful and creative. Perhaps their blend of “doing” and “being” inspired other readers to try the same.
