We’re Trick-or-Treating
every day of the year.
Not expecting tricks.
We wear a kind of costume called ‘ourselves’ each day of the week.
Some are more colorful, or have bigger hair, but, the mask is invisible to the naked eye.
We still hide behind our personal masks though.
Mine has a permanent smile on it that hides when I’m angry, scared or frustrated.
I keep those faces out of sight most of the time.
Am I the only one pretending to be a superhero, or movie star, or cartoon character?
If it’s true that we fake it until we make it,
then there’s nothing wrong with a little full-time pretending right?
Except I leave my cape in the car.
I’m pretty sure this Haiku for Hearts was posted to the Seattle Missed Connections around Halloween (what year, not sure) but it seemed appropriate to share it now. These days, it seems like tricksters in masks are everywhere you turn!

Shallow living will never keep you satisfied. But there’s always selfies for the temporary high from attention of other shallow people. Thats why your frustrated, you picked the wrong path. Have fun under that mask.
