Happy Holiday???

The Empress of the Kingdom of the Lovelorn Poets formally decrees Monday, October 10, 2011 as an editorial holiday. If you’re a public servant, school teacher, or bank employee, Happy Columbus Day! For those of you stuck at work, here’s a little holiday commentary. Is it possible to please any of the people any of the time? Probably not, but perhaps there’s some humor to be found in the irony of it all.

The lovelorn shall be back to their respective workstations on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 7:00am.

Discovering this fortune card on Nancy Ellis‘ Flickr page was a real treat as it’s part of a larger collection of public domain images originally available through the New York Public Library. The online collection is an incomplete deck – with nary a Joker to be found. But somehow, I think our lovelorn Queen of hearts would prefer it that way.

We may work together…
but I might as well be in another feudal territory, disregarded by the ruthless yet sexy Ronin General of your Love Army.
Still, you have conquered my heart.
When you happen to look my way, I feel a tsunami arise from deep within.
My affection is like a haiku… poignant and restrictive.
I look for meaning in between the lines of your tweets, but I never see the question I yearn for.
So here I ask it, and if you see this, your response will blossom like a cherry blossom in April.
Will you be my samurai, to sweep me up to ride that white horse of love?

Dear poet, are you looking for meaning from a samurai tsunami between lines of a tweet? 140 characters doesn’t give much space, but I suppose it’s not terribly different from a “poignant and restrictive” haiku. In my opinion, odes and notes referring to cherry blossoms and white horses are better strategies in the warm wars of the heart.

The first thing that came to mind when I read this brief message was the 2009 film “Moon” – a story about a man who literally and figuratively is “hanging in space.” If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. Warning: it is a bit of a sad tale, tho’. Technology has the ability to act as a substitute in so many areas of our life but not always.
