During this time of social-distancing and imposed quarantines, it seems like we’d be even more lost without our cable TV, on-demanding streaming, constantly refreshing Facebook/Twitter/Instagram feeds. Even though this found poem from Do the Math is from years ago, it speaks so strongly to what is happening right now in NYC. A city with millions of people who are now more alone and isolated than ever before. Stay well and stay occupied the best you can!

It’s easy to succumb to all the negative images and stories about how the world is responding (or not responding) to the COVID-19 pandemic. But there are also lots of affirming images and stories out there too. As Fred Rogers’ said, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” Keep washing your hands but keep looking for the good folks doing good works as well.

identities we fear peeking from
behind the veil
of our own construction
fragments seeking coalition

ebb flow catch and release

This found poem from the Las Vegas Missed Connections is several years old but as my eyes happened upon it today it felt strangely relevant to everything we’re experiencing right now with the coronavirus pandemic. With so much darkness and fear circulating we need frequent reminders to stay connected to our heart and soul – even if it has to be at a six foot distance.

They say that most people meet each other at grocery stores.
I often try to figure out how those kinds of conversations go.
Two people reaching for the same bacon.

Him: Oh, you like bacon?
Her: Yes, you like bacon too?
Him: Well it looks like we have that in common?
Her: Here is my phone number handsome.

I know that is not how my connection would happen at a grocery store. It would be more like this.

Her: Why do you keep running back to the produce section.
Me: I don’t write shopping lists and just kind of make it up as I go along.
Her: That’s stupid.
Me: So is kale.

I mean really, how does one even contemplate talking to a complete stranger in the produce section, or for that matter at all.

I found this piece of “creative nonfiction” on the Austin Missed Connections years ago and saved it because I found it funny in that “real-life-is-never-like-TV” kind of way. But now, with so many people preparating for the coronavirus pandemic, desperation and fear are bringing about all sorts of encounters – especially if you’re holding the last package of toilet paper. Strange times are afoot and that means anything can happen… even finding love (or at least a conversation) in the grocery store.
