There are many shadowy bits in this mindgallery poem that catch my attention, but my favorite is the line, “and flying dragons we’re always the hardest to shake off.” Whether you read it straight (interpreting “we’re” as “we are”) or read it without the apostrophe (interpreting “we’re” as “were”), both versions are equally compelling. Intentional or accidental? Only mindgallery knows.

took this lousy picture two days ago
the next day I read about shadow
it can’t be seen
but there’s a bird
sitting there
cooling itself
in the shadows
not afraid of something big
and these days when it comes to love
coincidence is all I have
I guess I’ll settle for 777
because it’s in the news again

these days the hair is being grown for
a donation
and sometimes I think more guys should do it
but
after reading what’s in the shadows
no woman deserves hair
from a guy like that

and I may be accused of how sad
s h ad ow
but she sits in the copper
in the dark
allowing no shadows
I pull up a chair and sit
I wash her hair and listen
and when we go outside
it’s pouring
in a moonless evening

If my memory is correct, this is the very first of the poems I found on the Flagstaff Missed Connections. At the time, I had just started growing my hair so that I could later donate it (a process that took almost two years). And while my hair was growing, the Flagstaff poet posted many, many more poems.

It’s true. I can’t blame it all on Murphy Brown reruns or the
Mary Tyler Moore Show and a few forgotten
memories of – That Girl.

But yes you’re right, I did want to be someone else. But since
i’ve been wearing this easter bonnet everyday
things have improved dramatically.

In fact, did I mention, I’m going to be in a new production of
– A Pocket Full Of Miracles.

I was told the costume director was creating a magnificent
limited edition easter bonnet just for the occasion.
They’re taking a plaster cast of my delicate
little crown tomorrow.

Easter is right around the corner and that means the return of spring and warmer weather. While I don’t have an easter bonnet, I do have too many winter caps, and I’m looking forward to retiring them for a few months.
