Someone from Athens once told me that perception of scent has a genetic basis – that a human with an alluring odor has a profile that, if combined with yours for procreation, would result in a stronger, healthier human. Not sure if that’s true, but scent certainly is a strange attractor and one that lingers in the mind long after all other things fade away.

Just like peanut butter,
the words are stuck to the roof of my mouth.
They won’t come out now,
as they never did before.
I wish I could tell you how much I appreciated you and loved you and how I wanted you all for myself.
I’m sorry I couldn’t keep it together,
so I didn’t stick around,
but now I wish that I had.
Every once in a while I find myself thinking about you at hours on end.
Torture.
Maybe one day I’ll see you again.

We all have something in our lives we wish had happened differently, don’t we? Decisions that felt right at the time but in hindsight were ill-informed. So what are you going to do now, dear poet? Sit around feeling terrible with a mouthful of peanut butter you won’t spit out?

I Love You Because I Know No Other Way
Missed Connections in Salt Lake City

I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or topaz,
Or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.
I love you as certain things are to be loved,
In secret, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that never blooms
But carries in itself the light of hidden flowers;
Thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance,
Risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;
so I love you because I know no other way than this:
where I does not exist, nor you,
So close that your hand on my chest is my hand,
So close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.

I wish our friendship had never died. I loved you with every moment of every day and I don’t care what you’ve done since we’ve been apart. I miss you so much and my heart still aches without you. I just want you back in my arms and on my lips. If just to tell you I still love you and always will.

Today we’re featuring three messages from Salt Lake City. Even though this very sad missed connection features a Pablo Neruda poem, it’s just so romantic and full of longing that I couldn’t not include it. Our lovelorn SLC poet might have de-emphasized their own words, which were clearly spoken from the heart, but they certainly picked a good poem to poach! This photo from Dee ‘lite also features Love Sonnet XVII in the comments. Is there anyone who doesn’t like this poem? 🙂

There’s no question I trust the Music Guru‘s soundtrack selections but when I saw this one I had to grimace. Sure I get it, Jersey Shore, Bruce, volcano, fire… but I am so not a Born in the USA-era Springsteen fan. In looking to find who else had covered this I found Tori Amos (shriekingly hellish), John Mayer (yawn), and Johnny Cash (creepy in a bad way). Three strikes and I was back to Bruce.  At least it’s not as bad as the Dancing in the Dark out-takes.

The message caught my eye because of the unique phrasing. It doesn’t say, “I need you to kiss me immediately” and it doesn’t say, “I need to kiss you immediately” but something slightly different and in-between. Intentional or accidental? We’ll never know.
