Gravity.
It can be a torturous thing, if you’re, say, stuck in a cycle and yearn to be free.
Gravity is why we sink, and sink, and sink, down into the sea, and drown. We drown in what we think is the darkness of isolation but really isn’t at all.
Gravity is why we tumble into the well, and what is it we had expected to find there when we had stared and had listened for echoes and had dropped our pennies? Wishes? Knowledge of the future? – and would that knowledge put us at ease the way we think it would?
Gravity. What a curse.
But what would we have without gravity? The sun doesn’t shine without gravity. The seasons don’t come and go without gravity.
How could we kiss without gravity? We’d just be hurtling and free-flung cosmonauts, bounding from wall to wall in weightlessness, trying to get our aim just right – just right – so we could line up our lips for one sweet collision. And then we’d be off, away, gone, hurtling once more.
We would all just be missed connections without gravity.
What a curse. What a lovely, lovely curse.
