Well, who would have thought that getting hi-jacked could yield such interesting and potentially romantic results? I’m hoping this message refers to figurative carjacking as in “Hey, can I carjack your plans and get a ride home?” Otherwise, it’s a little too creepy – kinda like this groovy golden gem from 1980.

We stared at each other for quite some time last night across that crowded bar. You, wearing, well, clothes. I caught your eye and you smiled at me. I smiled back. You tossed your hair. I was shy and looked away. I should have come up to you and said hello. Thrown out a cheesy pickup line. Not that I thought they’d work on you, but that you might laugh at my cheesiness. But I didn’t. I’m shy. So here’s a list of cheesy pickup lines:

  1. You must be in a wrong place – the Miss Universe contest is over there.
  2. Hey I just realized this, but you look a lot like my next girlfriend!
  3. If you were the new burger at McDonalds you would be the McGorgeous!

The summer-like weather in New York last week brought out a slew of mosquitoes (that perhaps are meeting their demise now that it’s back to feeling like March?) so I agree that multiple bites are entirely possible. The Music Guru dug into the archives to come up with this catchy soundtrack bit and it made me realize – Gilligan’s Island was the Lost of the Mad Men-era. 🙂

That’s one wild bus-ride! Where else but Brooklyn could you possibly find cats, kung-fu Vikings, and men in lobster costumes all in close proximity? While I understand the Viking connection for the Music Guru’s soundtrack pick, I’m lost if there’s any deeper meaning in the lyrics. However, I did learn that the Del Vikings were one of the first integrated rock-n-roll vocal groups in the mid-1950s – part of the effort to make sure everyone gets to sit wherever they want to when riding the bus (but something tells me lobster-man is probably stuck sitting alone most of the time..).

I saw you for the second time this week… this time at Starbucks. You remember which one… it was the Starbucks just down the street and around the corner from another Starbucks. As I recall, you were wearing something and so was I (I can’t believe the coincidence… it has to be fate!)
I think you saw me watching you watching me watching you order your cage-free, organic, free-range, low-fat, decaf (water process of course) soy-mocha-macchiato half Ethiopian Sidamo, half Columbian Narino Supremo with a twist, shaken, not stirred. Of course, I was too embarrassed to come up and talk to you because I had ordered a large drip with room and I felt that was just too vulgar… too common… too… well… unpretentious. What was I thinking, ordering an actual cup of coffee at a Starbucks?
If I had just taken that web-delivered PhD at www.coffeesnobs.com, I could have ordered something that impressed you and wittily and urbanely declared the blend, “Impertinent, but shy, with the taste of ripe blackberries, sun and smoke… with the nose of an oak-aged sherry, but the lingering caresses on the tongue of a 19 year old lover, expectant and eager.”
Anyway… I promise to do better next time.

The Starbucks “culture” is a veritable gold-mine for creative satire and our Atlanta poet fully exploits this in their message. Truth be told, second to grocery stores, most missed connections happen in coffee cafes so you never know who might be creeping around the perimeter the next time you order your barista-crafted beverage.
