Every time I read a missed connections post like this one I think of “Pale Blue Eyes” by the Velvet Underground. When those eyes linger on though, it’s only a short walk from feeling happy to feeling mad. Perhaps it’s better not to miss them. Is that possible?

I Can See Through the Trees

I’m glad you could see the forrest through the trees
Because this tree would stand next to you;
And weather the seasons together;
And gather rings with you-
Because I can tell you have beautiful heartwood-and that’s not pulp fiction.
It’s cold now but, I bet, come April or May-we’ll be buds.
My roots do run shallow but my trunks not hollow.
I’m no limbnologist, but I’ve noticed you got some pretty nice limbs.
I will try to keep our daily conversations interesting so that so that you will never be tempted to refer to me as “the emerald ash borer”.
At night, we can listen to the crickets and by day-the beetles, the birds, and the eagles.
The first time I saw you I wanted to drop my leaves right there; but it was broad daylight in June-the timing wasn’t right.
Everybody would’ve barked.
I’m as old as I am and I don’t have Dutch Elm.
We may lean on each other at times but I would never cut you down;
Because I am like you-
And I like you.
For some reason I think we could be very sappy together.

I love writing about the missed connections I find because I always learn something new. Today I discovered the word “chremamorphism” which means giving characteristics of an object to a person.  Pretty accurate for our lovelorn Madison-ite’s poem but I think I’ll stick with referring to him as a tree-hugger (in all the best ways).

Today

Today I saw a raggedy man.
Worn down, beat down, low down raggedy man.
No shoes on his feet, his life incomplete,
Nothing but the clothes he wore.
His eyes, they saw for miles and miles,
with memories of a million cries and smiles.
He has known love and he has known pain,
He has lost and he has gained,
his fortune, like the moon has waxed and waned.
His fortune lies not in jewels and gold,
His fortune is in his unbreakable soul.
I do not cry for this raggedy man I see,
For I was looking deep within,
The raggedy man is me. -mr. midnight

Does anyone else see me?

The Madison, WI missed connections featured a number of poems written by a “mr. midnight” this summer. I liked this one quite a bit as it reminded me of the raggedy times I’ve been through in the past (typically involving broken down cars, plastic trash bags containing personal effects, and long walks down decrepit city streets). The “unbreakable soul” is the key that starts the engine moving again, tho’. Not only do we see you, mr. midnight, we hear you loud and clear.
