A four-day weekend
gives us time to think about
planting a garden.

The windy rainy weather gives a reason to bake
a cornbread casserole, and dream about
sunny days ahead in Springtime.

It’s not too early to sketch out our plans
and think about what we can grow.

Potatoes and tomatoes, sunchokes and celeriac,
sweet peas and scallions.

And relaxing on the grass with a picnic and lemonade.

 

I don’t believe this Haiku for Hearts was intended to be a New Year’s poem , but some of us might have had a four day weekend thanks to how the holiday fell on a Monday and Tuesday this year. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one using that time to plan and scheme for the future and the warmer days (that are still months away). Here’s to 2019!

Love

Love

I am powerless.
There is no escape from your
Voodoo (Doughnut) Love

I cannot run or hide from the gravitational attraction of your Love.

My choices are to run passionately into our hopefulness together,
or fall head-long and be swallowed by it with my arms and legs loose in the wind.

I decapitate my (doughnut) old self, and leave behind, all that I was, all I believed,
and all I knew.

I walk forward blindly and as if naked, into the future, and leave my attachments
and old expectations and convictions by the wayside;

fragile signs and folding chairs that
have fallen
and tumbled

to the side
of the

highway.

I bring all of myself to the new day, and what it will truly turn out to be.

 

‘Tis the season for all sorts of delicious and decadent holiday treats at home and work (and seemingly everywhere you turn). Don’t try to hide from the love, but do remember, moderation is the key unless you want to spend the first months of the new year working off the extra pounds at the gym. šŸ˜‰

Supermarket lines
are getting longer each day.
Thanksgiving shoppers.

Even though it’s still a week until the big day, people are already
filling their carts with breadcrumb stuffing and canned cranberries.

The sound of carts colliding as neighbors race to be next in line
rings in the holiday season and the traditional cycle of “me first” behavior that lasts through December.

It’s no surprise that people are even more aggressive than ever
as we watch our leaders greedily line their own pockets and sell out future generations.

Why is no one is fighting for that one lonely Tofurkey unhappily cooped up next to the Butterballs?

Hey! Are those marshmallows organic, vegan, sustainable and gluten-free?
No one wants sweet potato casserole that isn’t all that.

(I don’t want it anyhow.)

 

The Thanksgiving holiday is right around the corner. How we got into the habit of making this a day dedicated to over-eating, drinking too much and getting stressed-out over preparations, travel, and guests is beyond me.Ā  Is that what we’re thankful for? I don’t think so.

The days seem stranger
this year than during past ones.
Post election blues.

I can’t seem to shake this sense of impending doom. I keep watching the skies
as if the attack is coming. I know it won’t. It’s not the bridges they are after.

It’s the currency that is at risk, the banks, the cables, the jobs,

the system.

Let’s start a commune and grow our own foods, and organize outdoor markets
and share with each other our information and tools.

and learn to help each other instead of letting our silence make us vulnerable.

It is our pride and false beliefs that make us suffer in silence instead of facing it head-on,
as a group.

Even here, strangely, there is power in numbers, if we only count ourselves in.

Do the math.

 

This haiku for hearts was found on the Seattle Missed Connections right after the 2016 elections. As today is an election day in many parts of the country, let’s hope people are exercising their power and voting. I wonder if the results this time around will warrant the same sort of message. Hopefully not.

Halloween parties
encourage misbehavior.
Remember last year.

 

Live and learn.
I may have said and done some things last year that I shouldn’t have.

But, by definition that did make the whole night ‘memorable’.

The potent combination of costume (read disguise) on the outside,
and unknown quantities of party punch hidden under clouds of dry ice,
is a true witches’ brew.

The result is lunacy and mayhem (and a hangover).

So I pledge to only watch, and not to be, “that guy” again this year.

And, honestly, I am still so sorry that I grabbed your sister’s butt.
You both wore the same costume, and I SWEAR I thought it was you.
